In brief

Many in Naples are left seeking refuge outdoors as a recent earthquake disrupts daily life and raises safety concerns.

Many residents in Naples and its surroundings have opted to sleep outdoors or in their cars following a powerful earthquake that rocked the region. The tremor, recorded at a magnitude of 4.4 by Italian seismologists, struck at 01:25 local time on Thursday (00:25 GMT) at a shallow depth of three kilometers (two miles). The US Geological Survey, in contrast, measured it at 4.2 with a depth of 10km. The earthquake caused power supply issues in various parts of Naples. In the neighboring town of Pozzuoli, which was close to the quake's epicenter, emergency services rescued an injured individual from the rubble of a partially collapsed building. The Phlegraean Fields, a volcanic region in southern Italy, make Naples susceptible to seismic events. Reports from Italian media indicate that the tremor was felt throughout multiple areas in the Campania region. Following the quake, residents experienced at least two aftershocks. Images circulating on social media depict people fleeing their homes and gathering in the streets as anxiety over additional tremors grows. There are also photos of damaged property, including one house with a partial collapse and a vehicle with a broken windscreen. In response to the situation, a rescue coordination center has been established to evaluate the extent of the damage. Schools in Pozzuoli and neighboring districts have been temporarily shut down for inspections to ensure building safety.
