In brief

Rescue teams are facing significant challenges while trying to save a 74-year-old truck driver, who has been trapped for over two days after his vehicle was swallowed by a large sinkhole triggered by a burst sewer pipe.

Emergency responders in Japan are intensifying their efforts to reach a truck driver who has been trapped for more than two days due to a large sinkhole that emerged just north of Tokyo. The incident occurred in Saitama Prefecture when the 74-year-old driver stopped at an intersection, and without warning, the ground opened beneath him, swallowing both the truck and the driver.Witnesses reported that the driver was initially responsive after the vehicle sank, indicating he was alive. However, as efforts to rescue him progressed, a subsequent mudslide within the sinkhole collapsed more debris onto the vehicle, burying it deeper and blocking any future communication with the trapped driver. The rescue operations have been severely hindered by the instability of the ground surrounding the sinkhole. Reports indicate that a secondary hole developing nearby merged with the first, causing the area to widen to approximately 65 feet in diameter. Rescue teams, under the guidance of local fire department officials, are now faced with grave challenges as the front part of the truck—where the driver is believed to be located—has become entirely obscured. The complexities of the situation have prompted rescuers to contemplate using heavy machinery to clear and access the depths of the sinkhole. On Wednesday, a crane was successful in extracting part of the truck's cargo bed, yet the driver remains unaccounted for.Local authorities have identified a burst sewer pipe as the catalyst for the sinkhole's formation. This has led to advisories for approximately 1.2 million residents in the vicinity to limit water usage. Additionally, previous inspections of the sewer system occurring every five years failed to predict urgent repairs, though some corrosion had been detected during a 2021 evaluation. In response to this unexpected disaster, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has mandated urgent evaluations of similar infrastructure systems, focusing particularly on those tied to large wastewater treatment facilities. As rescue efforts continue, hope remains that responders will be able to reach the trapped driver soon.
