In brief
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department faces backlash for a social media post that offered condolences to Iranian bombing victims, prompting an internal review and public apology.
On June 23, 2025, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department found itself in hot water after it posted a message on social media expressing sympathy for “the victims and families impacted” by recent American military strikes targeting three Iranian nuclear sites. The post was swiftly deleted, with the department issuing an apology and deeming the message “offensive and inappropriate.” According to a screenshot shared by local news channel KTLA, the initial post conveyed: “Our hearts go out to the victims and the families impacted by the recent bombings in Iran.” However, following immediate backlash, the Sheriff’s Department revised the message on platforms like Facebook and Instagram to reflect a more neutral stance: “Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is closely monitoring the situation overseas alongside our local, state, and federal partners.” In their statement, the Sheriff’s Department clarified that the now-deleted post was “unacceptable,” indicating it does not portray the views of Sheriff Robert G. Luna or the department itself. They emphasized that as a law enforcement agency, their focus does not extend to “foreign policy or military matters.” Moreover, an investigation was initiated to determine how such a statement had been permitted to publish. The Los Angeles County region is notable for its significant Iranian community, with approximately one-third of the roughly 400,000 Iranian-born immigrants residing in the area, as detailed by the Migration Policy Institute. The neighborhood of Westwood, located in close proximity to UCLA, has even earned the nickname “Tehrangeles.” Simultaneously, Los Angeles boasts one of the largest Jewish communities in the United States, estimated at over 500,000 residents according to 2021 research from Brandeis University, further marking the department's post as sensitive in nature. In a final note, the Sheriff’s Department assured residents that there were no specific threats to the community and announced an increase in patrol checks around places of worship and other sensitive locations, advocating vigilance among the local population.
