In brief
Culdesac Tempe offers a revolutionary living experience, where residents thrive without the need for automobiles, creating a vibrant community atmosphere.
In a groundbreaking approach to urban living, Culdesac Tempe, located on the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona, is redefining how communities can function without cars. Inspired by traditional towns in Italy and Greece, this neighborhood was designed to facilitate a car-free lifestyle, a concept that has attracted residents who prioritize sustainability and walkability.Andre Rouhani and Gabriela Reyes, who decided to move into the development last December, embraced this unique lifestyle despite having two dogs and a toddler. They found the community enticing, with appealing walkways, boutique shops, and charming architecture, all situated around welcoming courtyards. Their most surprising experience was the realization that there was no parking for residents, a feature that ultimately solidified their decision to join the car-free movement. "We do really, really love it here,” remarked Mr. Rouhani, reflecting on how the amenities and community life outweighed the challenges of living without a vehicle. “It’s the best place I’ve ever lived,” he added, highlighting the positive atmosphere of Culdesac Tempe.Culdesac Tempe marks a significant milestone as one of the first neighborhoods in the United States intentionally developed without cars. This initiative is part of a broader series titled "50 States, 50 Fixes," which explores local solutions to environmental challenges. With increasing interest in sustainable living, such developments may pave the way for more communities focused on reducing reliance on automobiles and fostering a deeper connection among residents.
