In brief
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has cancelled his upcoming trip to Russia following a head injury at home, but will participate in the Brics summit online.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been forced to cancel his planned trip to Russia after sustaining a head injury during an accident at his residence. The 78-year-old leader was due to travel on Sunday afternoon to attend the Brics summit, a significant gathering of emerging economies comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.A prominent hospital in Brasília has advised against long-haul flights temporarily, prompting the president to join the discussions via video link instead. In their statement, the Sírio-Libanês Hospital mentioned that while Lula is not permitted to undertake extensive travel, he is cleared to carry out his regular duties. The injury, described as a laceration to the back of his head, was serious enough to require medical monitoring and stitching.Lula's office has confirmed that he will participate in the summit from Brasília, although they have kept the specifics regarding his injury under wraps. Local reports indicated that the president received five stitches before being discharged from the hospital on Saturday; however, he returned for a follow-up visit on Sunday morning. The original plan entailed Lula meeting with President Vladimir Putin for the first time this year. Last Friday, Putin announced that he would not attend the G20 summit in Brazil next month, expressing concerns about potentially disrupting the event while also downplaying the impact of the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against him.The Brics organization, which includes several key emerging markets, is often viewed as a counterbalance to the G7 group of advanced economies. Established 15 years ago, its ranks have grown to include South Africa and other nations such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. This year’s summit will take place in Kazan, Russia, spanning from Tuesday to Thursday.
