In brief
South Korea’s exports reached a record $115.3 billion in October, up 93.7% compared with a year earlier, largely driven by a 259% surge in semiconductor shipments. The country logged a $42.5 billion trade surplus, with imports climbing 36% to $72.78 billion. The Bank of Korea highlighted the robust performance amid global supply‑chain pressures, noting that exports surpassed all forecasts.
South Korea’s monthly exports surged to a record US$115.3 billion in October, according to data released by the Bank of Korea, according to a press release from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources. The jump represented a 93.7 percent increase from a year earlier, placing the country at the forefront of global trade figures.
The rally was largely propelled by the semiconductor sector, which posted a 259 percent rise in shipments to US$56.4 billion, a figure that accounts for nearly one‑third of the total export value. Memory chips in particular experienced a sharp upturn, according to the Bank of Korea, which noted that the surging demand for technology components continues despite global supply‑chain challenges.
While semiconductors dominated the surge, automotive parts and consumer electronics also contributed to the upward trend, although their share was smaller than that of the chip sector. The Ministry highlighted the diversity of the country’s export mix, stressing that the robust performance is a testament to the resilience of South Korea’s global supply‑chain position.
Imports rose 36 percent to US$72.78 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of US$42.5 billion. The Bank of Korea pointed out that export growth outpaced every forecast, climbing 18 percent from the same month a year earlier, indicating that the performance is stronger than analysts expected.
Containers are stacked at a port in Pyeongtaek, around 60 kilometers south of Seoul, underscoring the logistical scale required to move the immense volume of goods. This logistical hub has become a centerpiece of the country’s export infrastructure, enabling the rapid transit of high‑value chips and other components to markets worldwide.
Experts say the record export figure underscores South Korea’s position as one of the world’s leading semiconductor exporters, a critical element of its trade balance. The Bank of Korea added that the robust performance is a sign of the country’s continued leadership in technology manufacturing, even amid fluctuating global demand.
