In brief

A Kenyan police officer lost his life in Haiti during an operation aimed at combating gang violence. His death is the first reported among the Kenyan forces sent in June 2023 as part of a multinational security mission to stabilize the nation and restore order.

A Kenyan police officer was fatally injured in Haiti on Sunday during a mission focused on combating gang violence and restoring order in the Caribbean nation, as confirmed by officials. This incident marks the first death among the Kenyan forces employed in the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) since their deployment in June of last year. The injured officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, was participating in an operation in the Artibonite region, positioned north of the capital, Port-au-Prince. After sustaining injuries, he was airlifted to a medical facility, where he ultimately succumbed later that day, according to a statement from the MSSM shared on social media platforms.Since June, hundreds of Kenyan police officers have been deployed to assist in U.S.-sponsored efforts aimed at curtailing rampant gang violence in Haiti. Following a surge in violence and unrest, Haiti's Prime Minister had made an urgent appeal for foreign intervention to help restore order in the country. The Multinational Security Support Mission is comprised predominantly of Kenyan police, alongside officers from Jamaica, the Bahamas, Belize, Guatemala, and El Salvador. This coalition has been tasked with reclaiming control of Port-au-Prince from well-armed and organized gangs that effectively govern significant areas of the capital.
