In brief
Meloni faces scrutiny after Italy released Libyan official wanted for serious war crimes while defending her government's actions.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has publicly disclosed that she is under investigation by local prosecutors regarding her involvement in the controversy surrounding the recent liberation of a Libyan figure accused of war crimes. The focus of the legal inquiry is on Osama Elmasry Njeem, a Libyan official with a notorious record linked to several prison facilities renowned for their severe treatment of inmates. Njeem was apprehended last week by Italian police in a hotel in Turin following an international arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) based in The Hague. The charges he faces include serious offenses such as murder, torture, and other forms of sexual violence. However, shortly after his arrest, he was released on grounds described by authorities as a "procedural issue" and subsequently flown back to Libya on an official aircraft. This unexpected release triggered criticism from human rights organizations and members of the political opposition, condemning Meloni for allegedly fostering closer ties with Libyan authorities, as Italy is heavily reliant on Libya to manage and deter migration towards its shores. The ICC also expressed disapproval, reinforcing the need for full cooperation from its member states in pursuing justice against criminals. In a video statement shared on social media, Meloni insisted that Njeem's release occurred due to the failure to transmit the arrest warrant to the Italian judiciary, which rendered the arrest itself invalid. She asserted that Njeem’s return to Libya was necessitated by security concerns and firmly declared, “I cannot be blackmailed.” The investigation has broadened to encompass Italy's Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio; Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi; and another official, Alfredo Mantovano. Both Nordio and Piantedosi are slated to address parliament on Wednesday regarding this unfolding case.
