In brief
Beijing's retaliation includes tariffs on US goods and antitrust investigations into American companies.
After the implementation of a new 10 percent tariff on all Chinese imports by President Trump, China wasted no time in announcing a range of counter-actions. Initiated at midnight Tuesday, this tariff action stemmed from an executive order aimed at urging Beijing to take tougher measures against the export of fentanyl into the United States. In retaliation, the Chinese government unveiled a series of measures targeting American companies and key imports from the U.S. This included increased tariffs on liquefied natural gas, coal, agricultural machinery, and various other products from the United States. Furthermore, Chinese regulators initiated an antitrust investigation into Google, a move that could significantly disrupt the search giant's limited dealings with Chinese enterprises, despite Google being blocked from China’s internet. The recently imposed tariffs mark an escalation in an ongoing trade dispute, with many Chinese goods already subjected to tariffs of 10 to 25 percent. With the new measures, goods that Americans acquire from China will face an additional 10 percent tax which applies to over $400 billion in annual imports.Trump's administration initially planned to extend tariffs to America's largest trading partners, namely Canada and Mexico. However, after intensive negotiations, Trump postponed the implementation of these tariffs for 30 days following promises from the Canadian and Mexican governments to enhance their monitoring of fentanyl shipments at the border. This series of tariffs and retaliatory measures signals a significant shift in the ongoing trade relationship between the U.S. and China and will likely have far-reaching implications for global commerce.
