In brief

Israeli naval forces conducted strikes on Hudaydah, Yemen, following missile threats from the Houthi movement aimed at Israel, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions.

The Israeli navy has executed targeted strikes on the Houthi-controlled port city of Hudaydah in Yemen amid ongoing escalations in the region. This military action was confirmed by the Israeli military, outlining the strikes were a direct response to Houthi missile attacks that have targeted Israel. The objective of the strikes, they stated, was to prevent the port from being utilized for military operations. As of now, there have been no immediate reports of casualties resulting from the airstrikes.Footage circulating on social media depicted towering black smoke plumes rising from the port, with Houthi-operated al-Masirah TV providing reports of two distinct strikes in the area. The Houthi group has been known for launching missiles at Israel in a show of solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza, particularly following conflicts that have escalated since October 2023. Just this past Thursday, a Houthi missile was intercepted over Jerusalem, while another struck near the main airport in Israel a month prior. The strikes on Hudaydah were executed unusually by naval forces rather than aircraft, occurring in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Prior to the attack, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had issued evacuation warnings for all individuals present at Hudaydah and other Houthi-operated ports, including Ras Isa and Salif. IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee communicated through X, urging the public to evacuate these strategic locations to ensure their safety. In a counter-response, Houthi deputy media chief Nasruddin Amer announced on X that the Israeli strike had not adversely affected the group’s operational capacity or the morale of their supporters, who have been consistently demonstrating in support of Gaza.Hudaydah port is particularly critical as it serves as the primary access point for food and humanitarian aid for millions of Yemenis impacted by the ongoing civil war since the Houthis took control of large areas of northern Yemen in 2014. Previous assaults on this port and others have led to significant disruptions; for instance, a strike last month reportedly killed one individual and rendered Hudaydah temporarily inoperative. The Iran-backed Houthi movement has recently intensified its attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, aligning its actions with the Palestinian cause. Since November of last year, the group has launched numerous missile and drone strikes against commercial vessels, demonstrating an escalation in tactics that forces many international shipping companies to re-route their operations, with significant impacts on global trade through the region. In response to the ongoing hostilities, former US President Joe Biden initiated air strikes against the Houthis, heightening military responses following the sustained conflict in the area.
