In brief
A nationwide power outage severely impacted Spain and parts of Portugal, but nearly all electricity has now been restored, according to national sources.
Spain's national electricity company reported early on Tuesday that power was back for almost all of the country after a significant outage that disrupted airports, trains, and streetlights. Red Eléctrica announced that by 6 a.m. local time, 99 percent of energy needs on the Iberian Peninsula were met, marking the end of hours without electricity that began on Monday. The outage also reached Portugal, where energy supplier REN confirmed that 85 of its 89 substations had been powered up again by late Monday, although some areas still experienced power loss. While officials were left puzzled over the outage's cause, they ruled out cyberattacks or foul play as potential reasons. This incident caused significant disruption for millions across the Iberian Peninsula, stranding travelers and impacting daily life. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to provide further updates regarding the blackout's origins.
