In brief

Roxie, a three-month-old red panda at Edinburgh Zoo, died shortly after fireworks caused her distress. Following the loss of her mother, the zoo is now advocating for stricter fireworks regulations as over a million sign a petition for change.

Roxie, the baby red panda at Edinburgh Zoo, was just three months old when her life was abruptly cut short. Having lost her mother, Ginger, only five days prior, the zookeepers had initially expressed concern for her well-being. However, they grew hopeful as Roxie started eating independently, showing signs of recovery. Tragically, that hope was dashed when footage revealed the young panda becoming increasingly agitated by the loud fireworks marking the annual Bonfire Night festivities.“The distress caused by the fireworks was evident,” noted Ben Supple, deputy chief executive of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. Roxie's anxiety took a turn for the worse, and shortly after becoming ill, she tragically choked on her vomit, resulting in her untimely death on November 5th. “It’s heartbreaking to have lost Roxie at such a young age,” Supple lamented, emphasizing her potential to be an ambassador for her endangered species. In response to the incident, the Royal Zoological Society is pushing for enhanced restrictions on fireworks displays, which are a traditional highlight of Bonfire Night, a UK celebration steeped in history since 1605. The public's support for this cause has been overwhelming; a petition demanding stricter controls has garnered over one million signatures and was presented to British lawmakers last week. The hopes of many now lie in preventing further tragedies for wildlife affected by these celebrated but disruptive displays.
