In brief

Amid escalating regional conflicts, Jordan has apprehended 16 suspects accused of planning to manufacture and smuggle weapons, highlighting security challenges in the kingdom.

The security services of Jordan reported on Tuesday that they apprehended 16 individuals who were allegedly plotting threats against national security involving the production of weapons, explosives, and drones, which were intended for training combatants both within the kingdom and abroad. The announcement from Jordan’s General Intelligence Department represent a rare admission of the security risks facing a nation typically viewed as one of the most stable in a tumultuous region. Historically, Jordan has been an essential ally for Western nations, particularly in combating Islamist extremism and mediating tensions within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Arab nation, which is home to a significant Palestinian populace, has found itself grappling with internal discontent linked to the ongoing situation in Gaza and the wider regional hostilities. This unrest has been further exacerbated after Jordan's support for Israel's defense against Iranian aerial assaults last spring. For several years, Jordan has been engaged in an ongoing struggle to thwart drug trafficking, which seeks to leverage Jordan's territory to reach affluent markets in the Gulf region. Tuesday's intelligence statement indicated the suspects had been under surveillance since 2021, a year marked by an attempted coup against King Abdullah II. During that incident, the king alleged that his half-brother, Prince Hamzah, had collaborated with external forces in a conspiracy threatening the kingdom's stability, resulting in the arrest of 14 individuals connected to that episode. The recent arrests, however, appeared to be distinct from the previous coup attempt, suggesting that the current tensions within Jordan are multifaceted. The intelligence report described plans involving the local production and importation of missiles, weapon acquisition, and the professional training of individuals both domestically and abroad. According to reports from the Reuters news agency, the detained suspects have connections to Hamas, particularly in light of the current conflict between Israel and the militant group in Gaza. In response to these ongoing threats, Jordan has worked diligently to counteract Iranian initiatives aimed at smuggling arms into Palestine, particularly in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, as outlined by both regional and U.S. officials.
