In brief

A devastating fire at a luxury hotel construction site in Busan, South Korea, has resulted in at least six deaths and left 25 others injured, following the rapid spread of flames that made evacuation challenging.

A catastrophic fire erupted on Friday at a construction site for a Banyan Tree resort in Busan, South Korea, leading to the tragic loss of six lives and injuring 25 others. According to local fire department officials, the blaze ignited around 10:50 a.m. in the ground-floor swimming pool area of the 12-story hotel. As the emergency response unfolded, thick, dark smoke was seen billowing from the site, hampering rescue efforts. Fire Chief Hong Moon-sik, who oversees Gijang County, reported that the six victims were discovered unconscious in the pool area, where burning insulation materials generated toxic fumes that exacerbated the evacuation challenges. In addition to the fatalities, emergency responders encountered numerous injured individuals throughout the building, which features three basement levels. Rescuers successfully reached 14 individuals stranded on the roof before managing to control the fire by 1:30 p.m. Local fire officials dispatched hundreds of firefighters and over 120 fire trucks to tackle the rapidly spreading blaze.Chief Hong explained that the high casualty numbers resulted from the fire's rapid expansion before firefighters could arrive. He confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the devastating incident. The Banyan Tree resort, owned by the Singaporean Banyan Group, was on track for an imminent opening as construction was nearing completion. This incident highlights the urgency of fire safety measures on construction sites, as officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.
