In brief
The Metropolitan Police have charged three Iranian men with espionage relating to activities aimed at British residents, raising serious national security concerns.
On May 17, 2025, three Iranian men, Mostafa Sepahvand (39), Farhad Javadi Manesh (44), and Shapoor Qalehali Khani Noori (55), were brought before a London court, accused of collaborating with Iran’s intelligence services to target individuals residing in the UK. They face charges under the National Security Act for their alleged activities between August 14 of the previous year and February 16, which included conducting surveillance aimed at orchestrating serious violence against an unnamed person. These arrests, executed by the Metropolitan Police on May 3, follow mounting fears over the involvement of Iranian operatives in threats posed to British citizens. In a public announcement, the police confirmed that the foreign state implicated in the charges is Iran. Reports indicate that the accused may have been zeroing in on journalists from Iran International, a London-based independent broadcaster that has frequently criticized the Iranian regime. All three suspects had previously entered the UK illegally between 2016 and 2022, with two of them part of a wave of individuals arriving via small boats from France. Britain's Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, emphasized in her statement that the legal process will proceed without interference but affirmed the government's commitment to tackling wider implications of Iran’s actions. Cooper stated, “We will not tolerate growing state threats on our soil,” expressing gratitude to law enforcement for their efforts. In light of these developments, Ken McCallum, the director of MI5, identified Iran as a key concern for national security, citing ongoing investigations into 20 Iranian-backed plots that pose lethal risks to the safety of UK residents. As this case unfolds, authorities are expected to take stringent measures to address the broader issues highlighted by these serious charges.
