In brief

Residents are reeling after two large sinkholes appeared in Surrey, England, leading to the evacuation of 30 homes and the declaration of a major incident by local authorities. While the cause remains uncertain, it is believed that geological factors and aging infrastructure played significant roles in this alarming event.

The first hole emerged on Godstone High Street and rapidly expanded to 65 feet long and 16 feet deep. A second hole nearby measured 16 feet on each side and was also 16 feet deep. Thankfully, both sinkholes have stabilized and are no longer growing. Geologists suggest that the region's sandy, unstable bedrock may have eroded due to several contributing factors: a potentially collapsed water main, an unrecorded mining operation beneath the streets, or the ongoing rainfall exacerbated by climate change, which adds strain to the already fragile structures. Despite the evacuation order, no injuries have been reported, although many residents are left uncertain about when they can return. One evacuee mentioned the insecurity of their home, expressing concern about the unknown extent of the damage. The nearby community remains vigilant as investigations into the cause of these sinkholes continue.
