In brief
Over 1,000 graves in Munich have mysteriously been marked with QR code stickers, leading to confusion among cemetery management. The situation has sparked a police investigation into the strange occurrence.
In a scenic cemetery in Munich, a curious phenomenon has emerged over the past few months as white stickers bearing QR codes have started appearing on gravestones. The first of these enigmatic marks appeared last year, but since then, the number has surged to over 1,000, transforming the sacred space into what some describe as a peculiar inventory system. "It’s really unusual,” commented Bernd Hoerauf, who manages Munich's cemeteries, during a recent interview. “We were left asking, 'What could possibly be the purpose behind this?'” Each of the rectangular stickers measures approximately 1 by 2 inches and features a QR code alongside a last name and a mix of letters and numbers. According to reports from the German media, QR codes have been legally used in cemeteries for over the past decade, allowing families to create digital memorials for their lost ones using photographs and mementos. Typically, these codes are etched into gravestones or affixed as metal plates as a heartfelt tribute to the deceased. However, the current situation is markedly different, with these stickers appearing haphazardly on a multitude of graves, causing concern and confusion among city officials and prompting a police investigation to uncover the intentions behind these mysterious additions to the cemetery landscape.
