Multiple prisons across France experienced a spate of violent attacks overnight, raising significant security alarms, as noted by Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin. In his statements, Darmanin described the incidents as "intimidation attempts" which included the burning of vehicles and gunfire from automatic weapons. Reports indicate that various establishments were affected, including those in Toulon, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Valence, Nîmes, Luynes, Villepinte, and Nanterre.
As part of his response, Darmanin took to social media platform X to announce his imminent visit to Toulon to support local prison officers in the wake of these assaults. Although he refrained from specifically blaming any group for the violence, he emphasized that the French government would implement measures aimed at disrupting criminal networks operating within and around the prisons. Authorities are on high alert as they investigate the motivations behind these coordinated attacks, which threaten the safety and order in the French penal system.
