At least eleven people were injured in a stabbing rampage that occurred at a Walmart supermarket in Traverse City, Michigan, according to law enforcement officials. A 42-year-old man has since been detained in connection with the violent episode.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as emergency responders flooded the carpark of the Walmart. Munson Medical Centre, located nearby, announced on social media that it was accommodating a significant number of victims as a result of the incident.
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating what has been labeled a "multiple stabbing incident." Sheriff Michael Shea reported that the suspect, a resident of Michigan, wielded a "folding knife style weapon." Preliminary assessments suggest that the attack was a seemingly "random act."
Shea praised the efforts of citizens who helped both in apprehending the attacker and in providing assistance to those injured. "This was a collaborative response, and the citizens played an essential role," he stated during a press briefing.
As of Saturday night, the hospital confirmed that five victims are in serious condition, while six others are classified as critical. In response to the outbreak of violence, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino indicated that federal agents are on-site to support the local law enforcement in their ongoing investigation.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her condolences, stating she is in contact with law enforcement regarding the tragic event. "Our thoughts are with the victims and the community as it copes with the aftermath of this brutal assault," she remarked.
Traverse City is located approximately 255 miles (410 kilometers) northwest of Detroit, and community members are coming together to support those affected by the violence.
