The family of a New Zealand father who disappeared nearly four years ago, taking his three children with him, has publicly called for his return. Tom Phillips, who has been on the run since December 2021, has been the subject of a national search linked to a custody dispute with his children's mother. The children, Ember, 9; Maverick, 10; and Jayda, 12, were spotted for the first time since their disappearance last October by a group of teenagers while trekking through a remote bush area, where they filmed the encounter.
In a poignant message, Phillips' mother expressed her daily hope for their safe return, while his sister, Rozzi Phillips, connected with a local news outlet, saying, "There's a lot of love and support, and we're here for you." Rozzi reflected emotionally on her desire to reconnect with her brother and the children, indicating that they are ready to aid him in whatever challenges he is facing. She shared a handwritten note from their mother, who conveyed deep feelings of sadness that led them to this situation and reiterated her love for the entire family.
Police suspect that Mr. Phillips fled with his children after losing legal custody, and believe he has been camping in New Zealand's western Waikato region. A reward of NZ$80,000 (£37,200) has been offered for information about their location. Recent sightings have included a credible report from local teenagers, who described seeing Phillips with the children in camouflage clothing and noted he appeared to be armed.
The situation took on further severity when a warrant was issued for Phillips' arrest due to his supposed involvement in a bank robbery in Te Kuiti, adding complexity to law enforcement's efforts. Authorities warn that he may be aided by others in evading capture, and they caution the public not to confront him directly. Concern continues to grow for the wellbeing of both Phillips and his children as the search persists.
