In brief
The UK’s strategic defense review plans to boost military capabilities, including the construction of submarines and advanced weaponry.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has unveiled an ambitious military strategy for the United Kingdom, signaling a shift towards 'war-fighting readiness' amid escalating global tensions. During a press briefing on Monday, he announced plans for the construction of up to 12 new attack submarines, in addition to a significant financial commitment towards nuclear weaponry and other military enhancements. Starmer emphasized the importance of preparedness, stating, “If you want to deter conflict, then the best way to do that is to prepare for conflict,” reflecting an increasing concern over Russian aggression, especially in light of recent developments in Ukraine. This announcement comes in the wake of a particularly fierce series of aerial assaults in the ongoing Ukrainian conflict, showcasing Russia's military capabilities. The defense review—a project led by former NATO secretary general George Robertson—was initiated after Starmer assumed office. The urgency of the review has sharpened, particularly following observations of President Trump’s diminishing focus on European security and his controversial rapport with President Vladimir Putin. Although the full details of the review are expected to be released later today, preliminary insights reveal plans for the procurement of up to 7,000 British-made long-range weapons, the establishment of a new cyber command, and a billion-pound investment to enhance Britain's digital military capabilities. Furthermore, significant funds are allocated for safeguarding vital underwater infrastructure and bolstering drone technology, acknowledging its effective use in contemporary warfare, notably in Ukraine.
