In brief

Amid heightened conflict between India and Pakistan, following a terrorist attack in Kashmir, multiple Indian aircraft reportedly went down in retaliatory military actions, sparking a dispute over the losses claimed by both nations.

Amid escalating military tensions following a terrorist strike in Kashmir, India has launched airstrikes against Pakistan, resulting in the downing of several Indian aircraft. While Indian officials have confirmed that two or three planes went down inside India’s territory, Pakistan has asserted that it successfully shot down five of these aircraft, in addition to one drone. The incident marks a significant increase in hostilities between the two neighboring countries, a situation that has deteriorated in recent weeks. Reports suggest that among the planes claimed by Pakistan are three Rafale fighter jets, a MIG-29, a Su-30, and a Heron drone. However, independent sources have yet to verify Pakistan's claims.John E. Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, noted that the aircraft could have been targeted using surface-to-air or air-to-air missiles, both of which are available to Pakistan. The Rafale, a twin-engine jet renowned for its versatility in air-to-ground and air-to-air combat, has been a subject of recent acquisition discussions between India and France, with additional planes expected to be delivered by 2030. Debris collected from the site of the downed aircraft in India-administered Kashmir has been tentatively identified as belonging to a Rafale or Mirage jet.The MIG-29, introduced to counter U.S. fighters like the F-16, has been widely used globally since its Soviet-era inception. It remains a popular choice among several nations, while also competing in international arms sales. The larger Su-30 offers significant capabilities for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, contrasting with the smaller MIG-29. Meanwhile, Heron drones, part of an Israeli-made family of unmanned aerial vehicles, form a critical component of India's military operations. As both countries exchange accusations and reports, the situation continues to evolve, raising concerns about further military escalation in the region.
