In brief
As the war in Ukraine continues, many women are making hazardous trips to connect with loved ones serving on the frontline.
Everything moved quickly for Damina Serbyn and Roman Myronenko. Their first date was a play in Kyiv, where she confessed, “I think I’ve fallen in love with you.” Shortly thereafter, they married, but Mr. Myronenko was soon deployed back into combat. Now, Ms. Serbyn makes treacherous journeys every two weeks to see him, traveling for hours to reach Kharkiv, where he serves as a deputy commander in a drone battalion.During her latest visit on a frigid evening, Ms. Serbyn arrived on a train filled with women similarly visiting their partners at the front, amidst ongoing missile threats. She leapt from the train directly into her husband’s embrace. “Without her, nothing makes sense,” Mr. Myronenko lamented, highlighting the emotional strain of separation. As the conflict persists with Russian forces advancing, countless soldiers face an uncertain timeline for returning home. In this environment, many Ukrainian women are determined to nurture their relationships and maintain family strength, often journeying to perilous locations, even bringing children along. Some choose to travel to more dangerous cities like Kharkiv, or even directly to frontline bases where risk is higher. These treacherous undertakings underscore a blend of bravery and devotion, as love continues to flourish amidst the shadow of war, proving that human connection remains vital even in the most challenging circumstances.
