In brief

The sinking of the Sea Story near Marsa Alam has aroused a massive search effort, leading to the heartwarming rescue of Khattab al-Faramawy's nephew Youssef. While five individuals have survived, seven remain unaccounted for, raising concerns for families of tourists onboard from various countries.

The Egyptian dive instructor, Khattab al-Faramawy, was part of a rescue operation that took place after a tragic incident where the tourist boat ‘Sea Story’ capsized in the Red Sea. While searching the wreckage, Khattab discovered that his own nephew, Youssef al-Faramawy, was among those trapped inside but miraculously alive. The boat sank following a powerful wave that struck near the coast of Marsa Alam on Monday.Rescuers reported finding five survivors from the vessel, while four bodies have been located. After three days of searching, seven individuals are still missing. "We dived 12m (40ft) under water - the survivors were trapped inside the boat cabins," Khattab told the BBC.The rescued passengers endured over 24 hours trapped within the submerged boat before help arrived. Given the complex structure of the four-deck vessel, Khattab described the challenges rescuer faced. "We were using torch lights to try to find our way into the darkness; it was quite a complicated mission," he recounted.Among those he saved was Youssef, a 23-year-old diving instructor who was onboard to assist with the trip. However, he became trapped in a cabin while attempting to rescue passengers. His father, Hussam, expressed his anguish and relief during a phone interview, stating, “I could do nothing but pray to God to help my boy, and thankfully his uncle finally saved him.” He broke down when he learned of his son’s survival, admitting he withheld news of the tragedy from Youssef’s mother until he knew he was safe.Youssef is currently being treated in a local hospital alongside other survivors. Out of the 44 passengers aboard the Sea Story, a total of 33 have been rescued so far. The identities of the deceased and missing individuals have yet to be officially released. Sources indicate that two of the missing are British nationals. The Egyptian navy is overseeing the ongoing rescue efforts while military officials restrict media access to survivors. Posts released by local authorities include videos documenting the rescue operation, showcasing survivors being brought to shore wrapped in blankets, with one survivor recalling, “I had been shaking with cold.”The Sea Story had embarked on a five-day diving excursion, but was reportedly caught in adverse weather conditions. The Egyptian Meteorological Authority had issued warnings about high waves, advising against maritime activities in the area prior to the incident. Officials confirmed that the vessel had all necessary safety certifications and no known technical issues.Diving tours remain a popular attraction in Marsa Alam's Red Sea resorts, drawing tourists from multiple countries, including the UK, Belgium, and Poland. The local council confirmed that among the missing are two tourists from Poland. The UK's Foreign Office has stated they are providing support for Britons affected by the incident, while the Chinese embassy reported that two of its nationals are in good health after being rescued.
