The final value of €8,582,500 included various fees, outstripping the previous record of €439,000 (£378,000; $513,000) set for a previous handbag sale.

Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s global head of handbags and fashion, lauded the auction as a testament to the allure and legacy of the Birkin. “The prototype is the starting point of an extraordinary story that gave us a modern icon,” Halimi stated, pointing to its unique features, such as Birkin's initials, a non-removable shoulder strap, and a history of charitable affiliations.

Jane Birkin, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 76, owned and used the bag for ten years before donating it to an auction for Aids-related charity. It was acquired by luxury boutique owner Catherine Benier, who kept it for 25 years before selling it to a private collector from Japan, culminating in this record-breaking auction.
