In brief

In the wake of ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas, Prime Minister Netanyahu concluded his meetings in Washington with U.S. President Trump, yet crucial issues regarding a potential truce remain unresolved.

On Friday, July 11, 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returned home without a concluded truce in Gaza after a series of discussions in Washington aimed at mediating the ongoing conflict with Hamas. Despite rising anticipation for a cease-fire, fundamental differences still cloud negotiations involving American and regional intermediaries from Egypt and Qatar. The proposed framework by Netanyahu includes a temporary two-month cease-fire, during which Hamas is expected to release half of the approximately 50 hostages held in Gaza, encompassing both living captives and deceased individuals. Nevertheless, he emphasized the significant unresolved factors hindering a formal agreement. Chief among these is Israel’s insistence that Hamas disarms before any serious talks commence regarding a lasting peace. Netanyahu outlined that the cessation of hostilities must hinge upon critical demands: Hamas must lay down its weapons, Gaza should be demilitarized, and the group’s military and governing powers must be dismantled. These terms were promptly rebuffed by Hamas officials. Basem Naim, a senior member of Hamas, emphatically stated that disarmament would “never” be an element of the negotiation process, thus casting further doubt on the trajectory of current discussions. With both sides standing firm in their positions, the prospects for peace in the region appear more uncertain than ever.
