In brief
A humanitarian crisis exacerbated by ongoing violence in Sudan has led to shocking casualties as violence intensifies.
At least 40 individuals have lost their lives following a violent attack on a camp for displaced persons in Darfur, Sudan. The assault occurred on Monday and was allegedly conducted by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group involved in a protracted civil conflict alongside the Sudanese army. This devastating incident was confirmed by an aid organization operational in the area, the Abu Shouk Emergency Response Room.Reports from the local resistance committee in El-Fasher city echoed these findings, highlighting that El-Fasher itself, the last stronghold of the military and its supporters in Darfur, was also subjected to significant assaults during the same period. The ongoing conflict, which has raged since April 2023, has escalated into a humanitarian disaster, with UN officials cautioning that families trapped in the besieged city are now at risk of starvation.According to local Sudanese media, the camp found itself in the crossfire of clashes within El-Fasher. The aid group working in Abu Shouk noted that casualties included individuals shot at home and others gunned down openly in the streets. Satellite imagery and video analysis from a US-based group revealed a large convocation of RSF vehicles in the northwestern parts of the camp, supporting claims that the attack originated from that direction. Furthermore, the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab reported investigations into troubling videos appearing to depict RSF forces shooting at fleeing individuals while using ethnic slurs.Created over 20 years ago for communities such as the Fur and Zaghawa, who have historically faced violence, the camp houses about 200,000 displaced individuals and has increasingly been a target in ongoing conflicts. The RSF has its roots in the Janjaweed militia, known for committing heinous acts, including genocide, during previous conflicts in the region. While the RSF disputes accusations of ethnic cleansing, it has gathered much scrutiny due to its activities in Darfur over the past two years.Zaghawa fighters aligning with the military may indicate that the RSF has persistently targeted Zaghawa civilians within the camp. Attacks against such camps near El-Fasher have been frequent; in April alone, more than 100 casualties occurred when the RSF seized Zamzam camp, precipitating a mass exodus. Since the onset of the war in April 2023, the conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced over 12 million people, with famine being declared in various regions of Sudan. The violence presents an ongoing crisis requiring international attention, as local populations endure unspeakable hardships under the dual pressures of warfare and starvation.
