In brief

Dr. Chester Griffiths and his family defy evacuation orders, battling the flames for nearly a week, until help arrived, highlighting the importance of preparedness and community action in times of crisis.

A brain surgeon from Los Angeles, Dr. Chester Griffiths, has become a local hero for his relentless efforts to protect his neighborhood from wildfires that have wreaked havoc across the region. At 62, Griffiths spent almost a week combating the flames, an event he had prepared for over the past 15 years. “We had always known that a fire would come someday - but we didn't know when,” he shared. Unfortunately, he and the community were unprepared for the catastrophic scale of this fire, which he described as "apocalyptic."Coming directly from performing brain surgery, Griffiths joined his son and a neighbor, Clayton Colbert, in an urgent fight against the Palisades fire that threatened their homes. They had anticipated such emergencies and had devised a comprehensive action plan, even procuring hoses to quell the flames. The trio connected four hoses to nearby hydrants, climbed onto rooftops, and valiantly sprayed down the fire while using dirt to snuff out embers that fell onto their property. For 12 grueling hours, they faced a relentless barrage of burning debris, enduring an ordeal that lasted until firefighters could finally join them a few days into the fight, hindered by the overwhelming number of wildfires affecting the area. Reflecting on the situation, Griffiths expressed understanding of the fire department’s challenges, noting, “That’s why it's so important to be trained ahead of time, to have your equipment and truly to have your community's support.”The ongoing wildfires have burned thousands of acres, causing significant property damage and placing over 90,000 residents under evacuation orders. The Palisades Fire, one of California's most devastating in history, has claimed at least 24 lives, with numerous others reported missing. Authorities warn that further destruction may be imminent as forecasts predict an increase in winds that exacerbate fire conditions. Los Angeles officials, including Mayor Karen Bass, are urgently preparing for the potential of near-hurricane force winds, while President Biden anticipates a severe financial impact on rebuilding efforts, predicting costs to reach tens of billions of dollars.
