The captain of a container ship that collided with a U.S. Navy oil tanker in the North Sea on Monday has been identified as a Russian national, as confirmed by the ship’s owning company, Ernst Russ. The captain was taken into custody in northern England on Tuesday, facing accusations of gross negligence manslaughter following the incident that resulted in one crew member being missing and presumed dead. The collision, which occurred approximately 13 nautical miles off the northeast coast of England, triggered explosions and fires on both vessels, enveloping the area in thick black smoke. British lawmakers have stated that there is currently no evidence linking the captain’s Russian nationality to the cause of the accident. Notably, Russian seafarers comprise about 10% of the international maritime workforce.Authorities reported that all crew members, apart from the one missing person, safely evacuated. The British police confirmed the captain’s arrest and stated that they are continuing their investigation. Specifics about the captain's identity were withheld, adhering to standard British law protocols. The Stena Immaculate, a tanker carrying jet fuel for U.S. military operations, was stationary at the time of impact. Experts have questioned the failure of radar and alert systems which might have averted the crash, which happened in clear daylight. Responding to queries in Parliament, Britain’s transportation minister Mike Kane indicated that while speculations about foul play were premature, “something did go terribly wrong.”The Stena Immaculate is operated by Crowley, a logistics firm based in Florida, under a short-term charter agreement with the U.S. government. The U.K. authorities are collaborating with American and Portuguese officials regarding the ongoing investigations into the incident.
