The Caribbean offers an enticing escape for travelers, especially for those seeking a unique and budget-friendly experience. Instead of relying on crowded cruise ships or expensive private charters, vacationers can embrace the charm of do-it-yourself (D.I.Y.) island-hopping via ferry services that connect St. Maarten and St. Martin to neighboring gems across the Caribbean Sea.
The dual-nation islands of Dutch St. Maarten and French St. Martin serve as a bustling gateway to the region. Princess Juliana International Airport, located in St. Maarten, welcomes numerous visitors and offers ferry connections to stunning nearby destinations like stylish St. Barts or serene Saba, just beyond the horizon.
The ferry ride presents a refreshing alternative; it combines exploration with affordability, allowing visitors to experience multiple islands in a single trip. "You can leave one island and get four or five stamps in your passport,” shared Malinda Hassell, tourism director for Saba, emphasizing the unique appeal of these island-hopping adventures.
On a recent expedition, I teamed up with my friend Anne Marie to curate our own spring journey, departing from the lively St. Maarten and taking ferries to enchanting French St. Barts, the rugged allure of Saba, and the sun-kissed shores of British Anguilla. This D.I.Y. approach not only allowed us to explore diverse landscapes but also enabled us to enjoy these paradises without the hustle and bustle typically associated with larger cruise operations.
