Following the announcement of his death on Monday, countless faithful flocked to St. John Lateran, a sacred site outside Vatican City and the official seat of Rome's bishop. Mauro Cappelli, grieving alongside his family, stated, “After we heard the brutal news, we thought, ‘We have to come here.’” This basilica, located near one of Rome's densest neighborhoods, became a focal point for mourning amid the city. Under clear skies, worshippers and tourists alike, many guided by flag-waving leaders, descended upon the historic church. Inside, a trio of older Italians voiced their sorrow in Italian, reflecting a shared sadness throughout the crowd. “Even if it was foreseeable, it was still a shock,” expressed Pasquale Di Tardo, who traveled from Bari for Easter. He noted Pope Francis' declining health, describing the bond he felt with the pontiff.Maria Puma, visiting with Di Tardo, shared her mixed feelings about Francis, expressing both respect and critiques during his tenure. Yet, on this day, the remembrance of his unwavering stance on tolerance and equality shone through. “He was such a strong figure, a man of peace," added Maria Antonini, Cappelli's wife. Many found solace in reflecting on the pope’s commitment to social justice, which contrasted sharply with contemporary political rhetoric. “We can only hope he has opened a door to a better future,” Cappelli concluded, capturing the essence of the emotional gathering at St. John Lateran.
