In brief
The escape highlights concerns over the safety and handling of research animals in facilities.
Authorities in South Carolina are searching for 43 rhesus macaques that fled a research facility after a keeper inadvertently left their enclosure door ajar. The primates, which are a part of a program for medical testing, escaped from Alpha Genesis, located in Beaufort County, known for its Lowcountry region. The Yemassee Police Department has raised alarms, advising residents to securely close all entry points and to report any monkey sightings immediately. The escaped group mainly consists of young females, weighing around 7lbs (3.2kg) each. Law enforcement noted that while the monkeys are "skittish," efforts are underway to lure them back with food. A police statement emphasized that civilians should refrain from approaching the animals, as they can be unpredictable. Traps have been deployed in their last known whereabouts, and officers are utilizing thermal imaging technology to aid their search. Greg Westergaard, CEO of Alpha Genesis, expressed disappointment over the incident but remains optimistic for a peaceful resolution. Highlighting the monkeys' nature, he noted that one monkey’s escape often leads to the others following suit. After the initial escape, the group, originally consisting of 50 animals, left the facility in large numbers, with only seven remaining. Westergaard remarked that while there are some natural food sources available, the monkeys have not encountered their favorite food: apples. He described capturing the creatures as a challenging endeavor, exacerbated by rainy weather, driving the monkeys to seek shelter. This event isn’t the first of its kind for Alpha Genesis; in previous years, multiple escape incidents were reported as well. Over the years, authorities have ensured public safety by affirming that despite the macaques' aggressive tendencies, there is minimal risk to local residents. Congressman Nancy Mace is actively working to update constituents on the situation, providing reassurance about the safety of the community during this peculiar escape episode.
