Zimbabwean Star Divine Lunga Survives Gun Attack in Johannesburg

Zimbabwe national team midfielder Divine Lunga (31) escaped unharmed after a gunman opened fire on his car while he was driving through the inner‑city suburb of Hillbrow in Johannesburg.

The attack occurred on Sunday, according to police in South Africa. Lunga, who also plays for Mamelodi Sundowns in the South African Premier League, was on his way to church with his younger brother when the suspect mistakenly identified them as undercover officers and fired at their vehicle.

South African Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the incident is being investigated as an attempted murder, but no arrests have been reported to date.

Crimes such as this highlight the persistent high rates of violent crime in South Africa. Officials continue to call for greater security measures in the city’s volatile neighbourhoods.
