An Algerian court has imposed a five-year prison sentence on Boualem Sansal, an 80-year-old writer, for purportedly jeopardizing the nation's territorial integrity. The sentencing occurred after Sansal, who was arrested upon flying from Paris to Algiers in November, made contentious remarks during an interview with a far-right French media outlet. He stated that France allocated excessive land to Algeria and insufficient to Morocco during the colonial era and asserted that Western Sahara was historically part of Morocco.
During his time in custody, Sansal has faced health issues that necessitated hospitalization. His detention has ignited widespread support from intellectuals and political figures, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Nigerian Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka. Macron has condemned Sansal's detention as arbitrary, linking it to the broader context of restoring trust between Algeria and France.
Sansal's situation has become a focal point of contention, reflecting the deteriorating diplomatic ties stemming from France's backing of Morocco's claims over Western Sahara. Algeria, which supported the Polisario group seeking independence for Western Sahara, reacted to this development by recalling its ambassador to Paris. In 2020, diplomatic relations with Morocco were also severed.
Legal representatives for Sansal have made an appeal to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, urging him to show compassion given the writer's advanced age and critical health condition. Known for his opposition to Islamism and criticism of the Algerian regime, Sansal has drawn polarized views; he is praised by some as a champion of freedom, while others label him a far-right figure catering to their biases.
Despite his challenges, Sansal has continued to write, with his notable works including “2084,” which satirizes religious extremism and has won accolades such as the Grand Prix of the Francophonie. His forthcoming novel, titled “Vivre,” is set for release in May, depicting a narrative around a select group of individuals designated to colonize a new world as humanity faces impending doom.
