In brief

A tragic stabbing in Mulhouse left one dead and several injured as police classify the act as terrorism.

In a shocking incident in Mulhouse, eastern France, a man carried out a knife attack on Saturday, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. President Emmanuel Macron condemned the act, stating, "It was a terrorist attack, there’s no doubt — an Islamist terrorist attack." The authorities are treating the situation with utmost seriousness, as the local police have launched an investigation. The perpetrator, 37, reportedly shouted "Allahu akbar," as he began his attack at a bustling market in the city situated approximately 70 miles from Strasbourg, near the borders of Germany and Switzerland. This phrase, meaning "God is great," has historically been used in both secular and religious contexts but has gained notoriety for its association with terrorist acts.A civilian heroically attempted to intervene during the chaos but sadly lost their life in the process. Among the wounded are three police officers, two of whom sustained serious injuries. The attacker was captured at the scene and has yet to be publicly identified; however, it was revealed by Nicolas Heitz, the prosecutor of Mulhouse, that he was on France's terrorist watch list. This individual is part of a registry that includes people monitored for possible radicalization and is mandated to exit French territory after their asylum requests are denied. In response to the attack, Michèle Lutz, the mayor of Mulhouse, expressed her shock and sorrow on social media, stating that "horror has just swept over our city." The incident has reignited concerns regarding security and the ongoing battle against terrorism in France.
