A massive cloudburst struck the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand on Monday, leading to flash floods that have left an unknown number of people feared trapped under debris in the village of Dharali. The incident occurred suddenly, around 1:30 PM local time, swelling the Kheerganga river and unleashing torrents of muddy water down the hilly terrain, swallowing roads, buildings, and restaurants in its path. Eyewitnesses reported a frantic scene as residents attempted to flee amidst the chaos, with rescue teams, including army personnel, now on-site trying to locate survivors.
The cloudburst created an artificial lake after blocking a section of the main river Bhagirathi, which could have severe consequences for downstream communities if not addressed promptly. Rescue operations are challenged by ongoing heavy rains, with injured individuals receiving medical care at nearby army facilities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences to the affected and commended relief efforts ongoing in the disaster-stricken area.
