President Biya, the world’s oldest president at 92 years of age, is aiming for an eighth consecutive term. He has dismissed calls for resignation, asserting his continued relevance to Cameroonian society after almost 43 years in power. The race will see Biya confronted by former allies from the North, Issa Tchiroma Bakary and Bello Bouba Maigari, as well as other viable candidates, including renowned anti-corruption lawyer Akere Muna and female candidate Patricia Tomaino Ndam Njoya, the sole woman on the list. Disqualified candidates will have a chance to contest the decision before the constitutional council within the next two days.

Cameroon’s Opposition Leader Disqualified from Presidential Race Against Longtime Ruler
Maurice Kamto, a prominent figure in Cameroon's politics, barred from upcoming presidential election as criticism mounts against Paul Biya’s extended rule.
In a controversial move, Maurice Kamto, a key opposition leader in Cameroon, has been disallowed from running in the presidential election set for October 12. Out of 83 candidates proposed to the electoral authority Elecam, only 13 were approved, with no explanation for Kamto’s exclusion. Having previously contested against the reigning President Paul Biya in the 2018 elections, which he claims were tainted by fraud, this development raises concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
