British consulate in East Jerusalem

In September, the United Kingdom imposed sanctions on Israeli settlement activities in the occupied West Bank, operating on the view that such settlements are illegal under international law.

Israel announced it would close the British consulate in East Jerusalem within 30 days of the UK’s sanctions announcement.

In response, the consulate sign was removed, sparking a diplomatic clash. The UK government maintains that the building will continue to function as a "UK Mission" and will not be closed.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has described the outcome as a "good outcome". The consulate in East Jerusalem is distinct from the UK embassy in Tel Aviv, which remains the main diplomatic hub.
