In a bid to stabilize international relations and reach a peace agreement, President Zelensky is meeting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman prior to critical U.S.-Ukraine discussions.
In an effort to mend relations with the United States while pushing for a favorable resolution to the ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday. This significant meeting in Saudi Arabia comes just ahead of planned talks between Ukrainian officials and their U.S. counterparts on Tuesday.Crown Prince Mohammed, who has aimed to enhance his nation’s role as a diplomatic intermediary, has been actively involved in international negotiations lately. Despite previous criticisms during his rise to power concerning human rights issues, he has effectively positioned Saudi Arabia as a crucial player in potential peace talks. Notably, the kingdom facilitated a complex prisoner swap last year involving U.S. and Russian nationals.President Zelensky recently postponed a prior visit to Saudi Arabia following an unprecedented meeting that included U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, aimed at reassessing their countries' dynamics concerning the war in Ukraine—without Zelensky's presence. Nevertheless, the president confirmed his intentions for the current visit, emphasizing his commitment to achieving a "just and lasting peace.""Since the onset of the war, Ukraine has been tirelessly pursuing peace," Zelensky stated via social media, insisting that viable proposals exist to resolve the conflict, which erupted following Russia's invasion three years ago. He expressed urgency, calling for swift and effective measures to secure peace for the afflicted region.
