Donald Trump says he asked FIFA to review Balogun’s ban
President Donald Trump announced that he had requested FIFA to review the one‑match suspension imposed on United States striker Folarin Balogun following a straight red card in the group stage of the World Cup.
Trump’s statement, made at a press event in Washington, criticized the referee’s decision as “horrible” and called the Brazilian official “a little bit suspect.” He argued that the ban would have left a “big stain” on the tournament and thus protested against FIFA’s ruling, though he claimed he did not instruct Swiss officials to suspend the card.
FIFA, after initially overturning the automatic one‑match ban for 12 months, allowed Balogun to be selected for the United States’ last‑16 match against Belgium. Nonetheless, the governing body affirmed that the decision was finalized by the commission and remained unchanged.
The Royal Belgian Football Association expressed surprise over FIFA’s action, stating that they were “astonished” and would pursue a defense of the sport’s principles in the coming months. UEFA also warned that such interventions “crossed a red line,” stressing the importance of fair competition.
Former England head coach Thomas Tuchel voiced concern that the incident sets a dangerous precedent, questioning the boundaries of appeals regarding yellow over red cards. The controversy underscores the delicate balance between political influence and sports integrity during major tournaments.
