WASHINGTON (AP) — Approval of President Donald Trump’s management of the government has sharply declined since early in his second term, according to a new AP-NORC poll, largely driven by discontent from fellow Republicans.

Conducted after recent Democratic victories in off-year elections and before Congress attempted to address the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, the poll shows only 33% of U.S. adults approve of Trump’s performance, down from 43% earlier this year.

This downturn was primarily fueled by a drop in approval from Republicans and independents. Currently, only about 68% of Republicans express approval of Trump’s performance, down from 81% in March, while independents' approval has plummeted from 38% to 25%.

The results further underscore the risks associated with the shutdown, a situation that Trump and his administration have sought to attribute entirely to the opposition party, despite public sentiment indicating that both parties share the blame for the ongoing crisis. The shutdown has severely impacted federal services, leaving many federal workers unpaid and food aid compromised for vulnerable communities.

Increasing Displeasure Among GOP

As Republicans traditionally show unwavering support for Trump, their growing dissatisfaction is particularly noteworthy. Beverly Lucas, a lifelong Republican and retired educator from Florida, expressed her concerns about the ongoing shutdown, likening Trump’s presidency to dealing with a petulant child controlling significant power.

The poll results also revealed that a vast majority of Democrats, about 95%, disapprove of Trump’s management, a slight increase from March’s 89% disapproval rate.

Trump's Overall Approval Remains Stable

Despite the notable decline in approval for his management style, Trump’s overall approval rating stands relatively steady compared to the previous month. The recent poll shows that about 36% of U.S. adults approve of his overall presidential performance, consistent with a previous poll conducted in October.

Shared Responsibility in the Shutdown

The ongoing government shutdown continues to face criticism from various quarters, with opinions suggesting that both parties must confront their roles in the situation. Many citizens are hopeful that negotiations will yield results, as there is a prevalent belief that the shutdown should not extend further, negatively impacting essential services and citizen welfare.

While it remains uncertain how Trump’s approval regarding government management will evolve, there is speculation that it may rebound if the government reopens. However, the current impasse may have a lasting impact on public perceptions of his presidency.

Overall, dissatisfaction with the current state of government management reflects broader issues that many Americans feel must be addressed if trust in leadership is to be restored.
