A speeding car fleeing police slammed into a crowded bar early Saturday, killing four people and injuring 11 in a historic district of Tampa, Florida, known for its vibrant nightlife.

At approximately 12:40 a.m., an aerial patrol unit spotted the silver sedan driving recklessly on a freeway after it had been seen engaging in street racing. The attempt by the Florida Highway Patrol to perform a PIT maneuver to disable the vehicle was unsuccessful.

Officers backed off as the car sped toward Ybor City, and ultimately, the driver lost control, crashing into a crowd outside Bradley’s on 7th bar.

Three individuals died at the scene, and a fourth was pronounced dead later at the hospital. As of Saturday afternoon, two individuals remain in critical condition, while others were stable or treated and released.

What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy. Our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims and all those impacted, said Police Chief Lee Bercaw.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, was arrested and faces multiple charges, including vehicular homicide and aggravated fleeing with serious injury or death.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor expressed condolences, stating, Our entire city feels this loss, while an ongoing investigation seeks to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

This tragedy has raised questions about police pursuit policies, especially after concerns regarding the safety risks associated with high-speed chases.
