In the early hours of Tuesday, a gunman opened fire outside the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Manisa, Turkey, injuring 11 students. Two victims remain in critical condition. Police quickly apprehended a 15‑year‑old suspect, who is believed to be a student at the school, along with the suspect’s mother, father, and grandfather who owned the weapon. The incident follows two deadly school shootings this year, prompting the Turkish government to tighten gun controls for the upcoming academic year. The education ministry condemned the tragedy and dispatched investigators amid an ongoing investigation into the motive.

A 15‑year‑old student was detained after a gunman fired into crowds outside the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the western province of Manisa. Eleven students were wounded, two in critical condition, according to police.

CCTV footage captured the suspect walking through empty streets, checking a shotgun, then fleeing the scene still holding the weapon. The police later recovered the firearm and secured the suspect, who is believed to have been a current student.

In addition to the suspect, authorities detained the individual’s mother, father and grandfather, identified as the owner of the gun. The justice minister, Akın Gürlek, emphasized that the investigator’s investigation will determine the motive, which remains unclear.

This incident marks the third school shooting in Turkey this year. Earlier attacks in April, including a 14‑year‑old’s shooting in Kahramanmaraş that killed nine students and a teacher, have sparked calls for stricter gun controls and reviewed school safety protocols.

The education ministry condemned the tragedy, stating, “This incident has deeply saddened our nation, and our educational community in particular.” Three national investigators have arrived in Manisa to aid the inquiry.
