In a surprising turn of events, Didier Dubreucq, known as one of the "grandpa robbers," has died just a month after being convicted for his role in the theft of millions of dollars' worth of jewelry from reality television star Kim Kardashian. French media report that the 69-year-old was diagnosed with lung cancer while in detention awaiting trial and had been undergoing chemotherapy treatment. In May, Dubreucq and seven accomplices were found guilty for their involvement in the notorious Paris heist that occurred nearly ten years ago. Dubreucq maintained his innocence throughout the trial, asserting it was a case of mistaken identity. During his court testimony in April, he stated, "I had nothing to do with this."Nicknamed "Blue Eyes," Dubreucq was not present for his sentencing due to health issues but was handed a seven-year prison sentence, with five years suspended. Since he had already spent two years in pre-trial detention, he did not serve additional time in prison.Three other gang members received sentences of up to eight years, mostly suspended, due to similar time served. She recounted her fears of being shot, stating, "I thought I would be shot dead on the bed." The theft involved around $10 million worth of jewelry, including her four million dollar engagement ring from rapper Kanye West.Following the verdicts, Kardashian described the heist as "the most terrifying experience of my life," highlighting the profound impact it has had on her and her family's life.
