Several players from the Sydney Swans were referred to Victoria Police after an alleged incident in Melbourne over the weekend, the club said this week.
The club confirmed the incident came after the team’s win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Chief executive Matthew Pavlich told reporters that the Swans were "extremely shocked and disappointed" that the situation had arisen, but declined to offer details about the allegations or the number of players involved.
Separately, Victoria Police said they were investigating a report of a sexual assault at a hotel on Wellington Parade early on Sunday morning. Police spokespersons added that the exact circumstances have yet to be established and the investigation remains ongoing.
The Australian Football League added that it had been made aware of the matter by the Swans and that the issue is currently under Victoria Police investigation. No arrests or additional information have been released so far as the case continues to unfold.
