Organisers of the Sydney Marathon announced that medals issued to this year’s participants will feature an engraving of Munich’s Allianz Arena rather than the city’s own Allianz Stadium.
Social media users noticed the discrepancy when the official event page released the medal design earlier in the week. While the intended medal should portray Sydney’s landmark stadium, the image shows the distinctive diamond‑shaped façade of Germany’s iconic arena.
A spokesperson said: “A little too much international flavour has found its way onto the back of the finishers’ medal, with an incorrect depiction of the stadium.” They described it as an “unfortunate error”.
Nonetheless, organisers are embracing the mistake, saying the medal “is a beautiful medal, and now a little more unique.” They noted that the error has provided a talking point that “has mostly been good humour”.
German users joined in on the jokes, posting on Instagram: “Oh wow, we didn’t have that on our bingo card!” and pointing out similarities between the two Allianz locations.
Runners will also receive a second side of the medal, featuring a gold and indigo pattern designed by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian. The artist confirmed he did not design the side with the incorrect stadium.
With a record 40,000 participants expected for Saturday 30 August, the marathon also celebrated strong community fundraising for local charities.
