Spain’s coalition government approves housing measures after eviction protest
Following the eviction of 87‑year‑old Maricarmen Abascal from her Madrid flat, the government announced a series of housing reforms aimed at easing pressure on vulnerable residents.
Health Minister Mónica García said the proposals could ban evictions until 2030 and extend lease agreements until 2028, while tightening rules on short‑term rentals and barring investment firms from purchasing homes.
Opposition voices warned that the measures might disadvantage small landlords, and the decisions still require parliamentary approval, at a time when the ruling coalition lacks a majority.
Supporters of the reforms highlighted that the policies were a direct response to the nationwide protests that erupted in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Málaga and Cádiz.
Abascal, who returned home after a deal with the property company, remains a symbol of Spain's acute housing crisis amid ongoing activism.
