South African Special Forces Charged in Detective Mathipa Murder
Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa, a senior detective with an elite police unit, was shot dead on an extra‑motorway outside Pretoria in August 2023. The police discovered that a black BMW registered to a front company used by the army’s special forces was tailing him just before the killing.
Seven members of the army’s Special Forces Regiment and one military police officer are now charged with murdering the detective. The prosecution’s case paper, which the BBC secured, includes CCTV footage, vehicle registration details and training‑exercise logs, all pointing to the soldiers’ involvement.
In parallel, Mathipa had been investigating the abduction and disappearance of an Ethiopian man, Abdella Abadigga, whom the army allegedly smuggled back to South Africa to use as an intelligence asset. That case has never fully resolved, yet witnesses and documents link the same special‑forces personnel to Abadigga’s disappearance.
Across Johannesburg and Pretoria, the African police system is confronting claims of a covert military intervention. No trial date for the accused has been set, and former Defence Minister Thandi Modise and President Cyril Ramaphosa have refused to comment on any alleged clearance of the forces’ actions.
The case remains one of the most contentious episodes in South Africa’s recent history, raising questions of accountability and rule of law. Families, including Mathipa’s daughter Basetsana, continue to demand that justice be served against those who allegedly decided the detective’s fate.
