In brief
Israel escalates operations against Hezbollah, targeting financing sources in Lebanon.
In a significant escalation of its military campaign against Hezbollah, the Israeli military launched a series of airstrikes across Lebanon on Sunday, specifically targeting branches of Al-Qard al-Hasan, a financial entity closely linked to the militant group. These strikes come amidst ongoing tensions and conflict in the region and aim to disrupt Hezbollah's operations by targeting its financial infrastructure.Since 2007, Al-Qard al-Hasan has faced U.S. sanctions due to its association with Hezbollah, which is seen as both a militant and political organization in Lebanon. The financial institution serves as a vital lender and service provider in regions where Lebanon's traditional banking services have collapsed. Many branches are embedded within residential complexes, catering mainly to the Shiite Muslim community, hence it is often perceived locally as a charitable organization.Following the strikes, Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee urged Lebanese civilians to evacuate areas surrounding Al-Qard al-Hasan's locations in Beirut as well as southern and eastern Lebanon. He claimed that the institution is integral to funding Hezbollah’s operations against Israel. Witnesses reported seeing large clouds of black smoke rising over the Lebanese capital shortly after, indicating the operations were substantial.According to a senior Israeli intelligence officer, the focus on financial institutions rather than conventional military targets reflects a strategic effort to undermine Hezbollah's grassroots support and operational capabilities. The airstrikes were interpreted as a clear message signaling Israel's commitment to diminishing Hezbollah's influence in Lebanon and disrupting its day-to-day financial operations. This latest development underscores the ongoing volatility in the region and the complexities of warfare that increasingly involves financial systems and infrastructure.
