In brief
Valerie, who went missing in November 2023, was recently located and is now being prepared for a reunion with her owners.
In a remarkable story of endurance, Valerie, a miniature dachshund, was rescued recently after surviving alone in the wilderness of Australia's Kangaroo Island for 529 days. Losing her way in November 2023, Valerie slipped out of her pen while her owners, Josh Fishlock and Georgia Gardner, were visiting the island. Despite an initial search lasting five days, the couple was forced to pause their efforts while locals continued to keep an eye out for the adventurous pup.Valerie's adventure, however, did not go unnoticed; she was occasionally spotted by local residents and captured on surveillance cameras. Just last week, rescuers announced they had successfully recaptured her. Jared Karran from Kangala Wildlife Rescue expressed the challenges faced in locating Valerie, but with perseverance, she was finally found. Known for not being an outdoor dog, Valerie's survival tactics appeared to include drinking from water sources and scavenging food. Her recognizable pink collar played a crucial role in confirming her identity when she was found about ten miles from her last known location.Currently, Valerie is undergoing a period of acclimation to prepare for her long-awaited reunion with her dedicated owners who had to endure the uncertainty of her whereabouts for more than a year. This heartwarming rescue serves as a reminder of the resilience of pets and the unbreakable bonds they share with their human companions.
